Construction started on site this week for a contemporary new poolside pavilion in Somerset. The new building will house a light and open lounge and kitchenette for the owners to enjoy their beautiful garden and entertain friends throughout the year. Huge opening doors, outdoor cooking facilities and covered seating areas will allow life to be lived al fresco in the summer. In the winter high performance glazing, warming underfloor heating and cosy wood stoves mean the garden can continue to be enjoyed in the coldest months. The building also contains changing and showering facilities, store and plant room.
All rooms sit underneath a floating timber roof which unites the spaces. Exposed timber soffit and joists extend seamlessly from inside to out blurring the boundaries. The projecting roof also serves the important environmental function of providing solar shading to the south facing glazing. The roof dissolves into a timber pergola which extends into the landscape. Below the sailing roof pale silvered timber boarding, soft buff render and minimal framed glazing contain the spaces. On the floor natural fossil pearl limestone runs continuously between inside and out.
The building sits within a walled garden enclosing an outdoor lounging area and natural swimming pool. Chemical free, the swimming pool uses cutting edge filtration systems provided by Clear Water Revival to provide perfectly clean water. Behind the garden room, an existing tennis court can also be enjoyed by the owners and guests.
The project is being constructed by Thomas and Thomas Ltd and is expected to be completed in autumn 2019.
