Our clients’ brief was to remove a redundant glazed lean-to on the side of their listed house and replace it with a slightly larger, contemporary garden room providing a central, level route from the house into their beautiful garden. We opted for a dark framed, slim line glazing system to maximise the connection between the interior and exterior, with sliding doors providing two thirds clear opening. The large glazed areas enabled the house and the brick and flint garden wall to appear to wrap around the garden room. Although the room faces south east the flat roof overhangs to shade the space from excessive solar gain.
The minimal design of the room contains a wall to house a contemporary inset fire and TV. With the doors opened up the smooth limestone flooring flows from inside to a large terrace beyond extending the feeling of space, the seating area feels like an outside “room” due to framing by the planted areas and the garden wall; an outside dining area provides an ideal spot from which to enjoy the sunshine and garden views.
We obtained Planning and Listed Building consents following a successful pre planning application to Wiltshire Council. Our client managed the project on site with her builder and the new stylish room has transformed the central area of the house into a year round sitting room for the family with an easy open connection to the garden.
