Cedar Courtyard Extension

A Victorian terraced house is transformed with a large extension providing a new well-lit kitchen/dining area. Roof lights and a subtle new lighting scheme create bright welcoming spaces, a rearranged internal floor plan improves proportions and a new bathroom adds an element of luxury.

Set on the steep northern slopes of the city of Bath, this Victorian terraced house had a small kitchen in a 1970s extension in the dark rear courtyard which we replaced with a larger extension covering most of the courtyard, thus creating an open well-lit kitchen dining area connected to the rear study.

The tiny new courtyard, accessed through bi-folding doors from the dining area has enough space for a BBQ.   A rich walnut worktop and copper coloured tiles bring warmth to the new shaker style painted kitchen which also includes a shower room and larder.

First floor improvements involved removing the small shower room in the second bedroom, restoring its proportions to accommodate a four poster bed, and replacing it with a luxurious Victorian styled family bathroom accessed off the stairs.  Contemporary external vertical cedar timber cladding encases the bathroom “box”.

Discrete LED lighting and 3 rooflights flood light into the centre of the house, bathroom and dining room, transforming potentially dark spaces into bright welcoming areas.
